Some audio examples, below.
A spacecraft in trouble
from DELAY
Atmos. Short tour through a post-disaster spacecraft; various rooms, plus automated voice. (Headphones recommended.)
For the 'failing technology' fizzes, hums, and interference, I used an electromagnetic microphone to record the hidden sounds of the studio theatre itself - the lighting and sound rig, the LEDs in operation – incorporating them into the final sound design.
Theme
from Vidya Wade
Bittersweet variation on a recurring theme that plays throughout a supernatural tale for radio. String ensemble, synths, treated strings.
This theme, mixed and arranged differently, was also used for parts of DELAY (the projects were developed around the same time.) In the radio version the idiosyncratic string techniques evoke a human scale; in DELAY, the mix puts the strings in a much more ambient-style space, emphasising the cosmic.
Dance music
from Babel's Cupid (R&D, National Theatre Studio)
For the 'Responsibility Dance', a mid-play wig-out that leads to some dramatic/romantic escalations. Modern electro with ambient synths.
This was live-mixed and triggered in the rehearsal room, responsive to the performers movements, its ebb and flow built around interjections of dialogue.
