Nightshift Variations
Faulty torch songs by TXA
This is a collection of songs from various points in my mysterious songwriting career.
Some have been previously recorded, or released, or played live. Some do not fall into any of these categories. On some, perhaps only the chords or melodies remain.
But in early 2023 I found a way of committing these tracks to one album that seemed to make sense – and did good things with old material, and made me very happy.
And what’s more, they all seemed to have something to do with the night.
Track listing:
1. Designated Drive
2. Love On The Nightshift
3. Star & Garter, 3am
4. Straight To The Point
5. Skewered
6. Saint Joan
Skewered written by Timothy X Atack, Doug Bott and Neil Johnson
All other songs written / arranged / performed / mixed / produced by TXA
Recorded – purposefully, incidentally, and accidentally – at almost too many locations to list, but including: J&J Studios Bristol, Alma Vale Bristol, RealWorld, ICA London, Spell 7 Singapore, LagerhaUSE Freiburg, and a hotel I can’t remember the name of in Kuopio, Finland.
Cover photo by Tanuja Amarasuriya, mix surgery by Jim Barr at J&J Studios Bristol, mastered by Jason Mitchell at LOUD
Angel Tech
Radiophonic pop music from Bristol
by Neil Johnson, Doug Bott, Timothy X Atack
Who knows if Angel Tech will make any more music... but most music we did make over the course of 20 years can be found somewhere on the internet. You could start with our bandcamp which includes all our albums, EPs, compilations, and soundtracks for shows (or at least, everything we captured and wrestled into a final mix.)
Here's a track from each of our 3 LPs, most recent first:
And here's a deep cut treat (that we could never officially release, obvs) from the sessions for our debut album, recorded late night at Realworld studios:
North Sea Navigator
Songs from darkest England
NSN is the brain-child of songwriter poet and composer Paul Atten Ash. I've provided drums, harmonium, synth and vocals for versions of the NSN live band, as well as mixing &or producing some of their releases.
Dark and uncompromising then eerily beautiful (and often all at once) Paul's songwriting is something else. You can hear it on the NSN bandcamp here, and here's one of my favourite tracks from our debut LP:
Former Producer
My raggedy audio sketchbook, full of byproducts, offcuts and music that had nowhere in particular to go, can be found here.
It includes a bizarrely popular version of the Doctor Who theme tune, some stuff that later became soundtracks or songs, and some completely unlistenable mash-ups.
